Hello and Welcome back!

This week I will be discussing and reflecting on my time in weeks 2 and 3 of J/I Mathematics Part 1.

In week 2, we developed a relationship with the Ontario Math Curriculum for grades 1-8. We were introduced to the different strands of math, which includes number sense and numeration, measurement, geometry/spatial sense, patterning and algebra, data management/ probability. We were also exposed to the knowledge and skills that students are supposed to posses in each grade. The knowledge and skills are broken down into overall and specific expectations. The curriculum does a great job of outlining to teachers what students will know by the end of each grade. We where also introduced to the different mathematical processes.

During class, we were divided into groups and asked to solve a “Handshake problem.”  In our groups, we collaboratively discussed how to solve this problem. Once we finished discussing our solution, we then got to share our answer with our class. Each group shared their answer out loud. They described how they came to their solutions. This activity was great because we were able to see the multiple ways in which the solution could be achieved. The idea of collaborating in smaller groups, and then sharing with the class is a great way to engage students. I can use this method as a future educator in my classroom.

In week 3, we talked about using manipulatives for teaching and learning math. The manipulatives we used where base ten blocks. In our table group we solved various addition, subtraction, and multiplication problems. It was challenging to break down a simple addition problem into base ten blocks, as I have not used base ten blocks since elementary school. Manipulatives are a great way for students to represent and visualize numbers. Base ten blocks help students with understanding place value, and then moving forward to addition, subtraction etc. This activity was a great way to show Teacher Candidates that in math you must be able to zoom in and out.

In week 3, we also had an online portion of class. We had to work in our assigned groups to research a digital math platform. The resource manager in my group chose to explore the digital platform called “Prodigy.” This website is an amazing tool which allows grade 1-8 students to complete curriculum aligned questions, in a fun and engaging way. My role this week was to be the implementation detective, which means I had to outline a way to implement this digital platform into a lesson. There are multiple ways to implement this into the everyday classroom, such as devoting the last ten minutes of a math lesson to testing the students knowledge by working on Prodigy. This will engage students in math lessons.

The past two weeks in our math class have been nothing short of informative and engaging. I look forward to learning more about math and how to teach math!

Until next time,

Genevieve.
